Small enterprise internet marketing is not about building a domain and "they will come". They may only come after you get into the practice of working on your internet site regularly.
The root of any successful website these days is the careful selection of keywords. You may never become successful if your keywords attract millions of searchers, if you sell shoes there is not any way you can go head to head with Zappos.com or any other great corporations in that business. You've got to look for an underutilized segment or "niche" inside that overall heading of shoes, as an example "pink stilettos". These keywords called "long tail keywords" or "keyword phrases" will immediately get you further up the SERPs than by simply using the word "shoes". Google's Keyword tool is perfect for amateurs to find under-used phrases or long tail keywords.
If you put in the words "leather shoes", Google will display a list of phrases built around that phrase and also tell you how frequently a specific phrase is employed on a once per month basis.
It is a good free tool to start with, but there are other, better keyword finders that can be used, but you have got to pay for them. The Google keyword tool will return phrases like "red leather shoes", "where to buy leather shoes" etc, and it is your decision to choose which long tail keyword phrases to use. It is best to go for somewhere in mid range of search phrases, say 3,000 to six thousand / month, any amount of searches greater than that may have too much competition. Your aim is to get on page one of Google's search results which isn't easy, notwithstanding what a lot of marketing "gurus" tell you.
Google likes websites that are regularly updated and contain relevant content. So get into the habit of writing at least a 500 word article every few days, which is keyword-rich.
Use your keywords inside the initial few words of your initial part and again in the closing paragraph. Dependent on the length of the essay, use the phrase two times more. If you're employing advertising thru Google Adwords, this may also help Google to serve tighter targeted advertising to your internet site.
Then there are backlinks. These are the curse of any website owner. There is no easy method to get around building good important back-links. Don't ever consider purchasing backlinks from a link farm, Google knows all about them and will pay no attention to them and will even penalise you for them. There are no Wordpress plug ins for building backlinks, only ones that get you backlinks thru "do follow" blogs.
Although article marketing has reduced in popularity since the Google Panda slap, they are still glorious ways of getting backlinks but it implies you'll have to write and submit relevant and well-crafted articles to those directories on a consistent basis or pay to submit to an automated service that will send your article to many directories.
It saves lots of time and really pays for itself vis the time you save, if you use that time doing something else beneficial for your business.
